Birds of a Feather

I've been looking on Etsy for a print to put in the twins room on a shelf (love that website), but I've discovered I'm quite cheap, call it thrifty if you want to put a better spin on it. Whatever you call it, I couldn't justify buying anything. I wanted some kind of print that represented 2. While I was in the shower I remembered the picture below I took. Anyways, I played around with it a bit and think it's cute.

This was my Walmart fabric inspired project.  While I was scooting around Walmart I found these for a whopping $1.50 a yard.  I also had several left over canvases from various art projects, so I stapled the fabric on and viola! Art!

Ever since Nate started saying the pledge of allegiance to this one I can't get it out of my mind that it is a flag.  So ... thoughts?  I'm kind of on the fence on it.  I could leave it be, take it down altogether, or maybe add something, like a twins initial.  Won't be offended, let me know what you think....

Cover 'em up

I mentioned this project a couple posts back. My friend Nicole came and helped me with it since I'm not really supposed to do projects. We have a little bit of a dresser shortage, so I have been scavenging. Our college neighbor was getting rid of his dresser that he has had since a child, but he had collected stickers over the past 20 years on the front drawers. I had thought about painting it, but decided to do something a little different. I picked out this paper, bought new handles, and Nicole Mod Podged right over the stickers on this puppy. Pretty cheap and easy (especially when I don't have to do it) project.

Stripey Wall

So, I am a project person. I love using things I already have to make something new. Especially being in a new house I keep coming up with projects. The only thing, is, I'm not supposed to do projects- this is not easy for me. I usually get an idea and compulsively work on it until it's done. I also typically get an idea in my head and want to do it, "right now!" The Lord is building me in patience as well as graciously surrounding me with people who will help me with my projects. Well, before I was put on bed rest I had it in my head that I wanted stripes somewhere. I scouted the house and thought the perfect wall would be the one between Lucy and Will's room. I used the colors from the LR and DR for the stripes so I didn't have to buy new paint, spray painted frames I already had red, and got the yellow dresser as a hand me down. After the twins are born Ada will be moving upstairs with Lucy so I made a little changing area up there. Anyways, I thought I'd post a picture. It's not the best picture, the colors aren't that great and with my 50 mm I had issues, but you get the idea. More projects to come, my friend Nicole worked on one today and her grandma is actually making some curtains for me- so nice, huh?

One last project

One last project... and I'm so pleased with it. This is a high chair I bought for $3 at a garage sale a while ago and have been wanting to paint. I found this color and it's just what I wanted. I still want to make a cushion for the back, but it will do for now. Now we have 3 high chairs... totally necessary right? The other 2 are plastic though and this is one I can hopefully hand down to the grandchildren.

Despite their begging and pleading I couldn't quite bring myself to let them paint, so we ended up doing the sanding together.

Hair Flowers

So these have been occupying my time the last few days while we've been huddled away from the rain. I had this idea and then ran to Michaels to get the supplies. I like them for a few reasons.
For one: they are easy and something fun to do while I'm at home.
For two: I think they're really cute in Lu's hair
For three: they are really cheap
For Four: in no time Lucy will be able to design and make them too.
If Lucy goes to your little girl's birthday, don't be surprised to see the present topped with one of these!

1st baby project

 

I've now made 8 spit up rags- though I'm hoping not to have a spitter. I'm looking for a third fabric to do the last 4. It's been fun to have the machine out a little.

Operation Chandelier Recovery

So, I have seen a couple blogging friends find old chandeliers and fix them up. Ever since, I have been on the lookout. I was so excited when I found this one on craigslist and got it for free! I'm still debating about where to put it. I was actually planning on painting it a different color, but fell in love with this peacock blue. I won't bring it back to St. Louis this next year, but will save it for the B'ham home. I'm thinking of painting our bedroom a chocolate brown, accenting with this color and using our light yellow quilt- hmm that might just work. If not, it might end up in Lucy's room. Nate's not sure if he can quite handle this in our room- we'll see. Anyway, I have a year to figure it out...

Brightening Up

As the weather is brightening up, so is my house. With my eagerness for the next season usually comes eagerness for a little change. However, changes with little budget can be a bit limiting. I've found myself at thrift stores more lately just trying to find something to add a little springyness to our house. I did not have much success. Then I found this fabric which I love! It was dirt cheap and I got enough to cover a stool and make a table runner out of. It brought some fun new colors to the house- especially red! To tie in the living room to the dining room I found my Red Christmas pillows from the basement and brought them up. I rearranged some furniture (don't know if it's any better- but it is fun and new) and have been pulling out new accessories from around the house. These few changes brought some needed freshness and I'm loving the colors!

Springing forward

I figured that maybe if I pretend like it's Spring it will come sooner. These shoes were calling me from the shelf and I couldn't resist. Yes, we just got 8 inches of snow yesterday (d0n't get me started), and no I can't currently wear these shoes (don't get me started), nonetheless they followed me home- and I'm quite glad!

First sewing project

During Lucy's quiet time I was hemming up some pants. She saw me and was very intrigued with the mysterious machine (I'm ashamed to admit that she hasn't seen it much). Anyway, we made a little "L" pillow for her bed- she is pretty proud of her creation.

Hallowrina

About a month ago Lucy decided she wanted to be a pink flower. I was brainstorming how I was going to make it happen and was happy with that idea. About a week later she was riding with a couple of friends and they said they were going to be ballerinas. She became passionate about being a ballerina also (the power of peer pressure). I thought that was a fine idea, but started looking around and decided it wouldn't be as easy as I thought. We decided to step away from being a ballerina, but ever sense, Halloween has been called Hallowrina. So finally she decided she wanted to be Lolly from Candy Land for Hallowrina. I told Lucy that was her final answer and we went with it. I took out the old sewing machine (which doesn't come out often enough), bought some candy, and went to work. As for Will, I was going to make him Lord Licorice from Candy Land, but the creative groove stopped and he became a M&M to go with the theme. They were so sweet (pun intended).


Our good friend Peter ends up spending a lot of special occasions with us, he's become a regular and joined us for an Autumn feast. Lucy and Will helped gather the leaves for the table and get ready for the meal. We had Cornish game hens and yams- pretty scrumptious.

Will was not at all pleased with his costume. Nate kept saying, "I don't blame him". Nate thought we should have made him a truck driver, knight, or warrior. The costume was looking hopeless until we started to give him a taste of what Halloween's about ... Candy! We started saying , "great costume Will, here have a piece of chocolate". It didn't take long before he decided he could cope with wearing the costume if the theme of candy continued.


Note above the chocolate around Will's mouth. Time to go out and get some more candy!



Above are our friends Maggie and Caroline who we ran into while trick-or-treating. These are the two who inspired the new name for Halloween, Hallowrina that is.

Time to come home and dig in!
